We welcome today’s health and medical research announcement by the Federal Government including the powerful Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) research missions that will be delivered through the NHMRC. “The package recognises the power of science, expertise and evidence to drive medical research, drug discovery, health care technology, and the best medical care for Australians,” Academy President Professor Chennupati Jagadish said. The Academy also welcomes the centralising of clinical trials in Australia to create a ‘One Stop Shop’, which will improve the accessibility of life-saving technologies developed from scientific research and reduce regulatory burden. The Academy made a submission to the Inquiry into the importance of Antarctica to Australia's national interests. https://lnkd.in/gfZpYT_j The submission recommends the Australian Government implements a comprehensive scientific agenda capable of addressing both national and global research priorities in the Antarctic and Southern Ocean. What follows is a summary of our submission: Why is Antarctica important to Australia’s national interest?   In our submission to the Joint Standing Committee on the National Capital and External Territories, the Academy stressed the vital role of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean in the global climate system, and the necessity of significant and sustained funding, as well as long-term financial planning, for Antarctic research. As one of the nearest landmasses to Antarctica, Australia is directly influenced by Antarctic ecosystems and Southern Ocean weather patterns. Bushfires are a natural and essential part of many Australian ecosystems, but we have seen the significant impact they can have on lives, property and the environment. Dr Hamish Clarke (University of Melbourne) says if we're going to live with fire, we'd better get to know it.
